Symbiotic Structures - Project Outline
This project explores how symbiotic organisms, such as lichen and moss, depend on one another just as we as humans do. During the pandemic it has become obvious that we need and crave a connection to other humans and when that is restricted and taken away, we no longer thrive, only survive. Similarly, lichen and moss depend on the right climate in order to thrive and spread. We at one point in our history depended on lichen for our cottage industry to help us dye materials. Now we depend on it to show us pollution indicators and also beauty in some parts of the world. This project aims to bring together the beauty of those symbiotic organisms and create four separate spaces in which people can connect with them. The processes used are all digital techniques from embroidery, print, laser, jacquard and projection mapping.
